To foster a closer community, the comment system instead of the old, "I just want to speak my mind about the original post" become a communication channel, in Web1.0 term, a chat room or discussion thread. In some instance, a simple blog post or status update could generate from hundreds to millions of comments. Say Justin Bieber announcing that he is gay. Million of young girl will comment on how disappointed they are, million of gay guy will tell him how cute he look, another million of gay guy will tell him that they are gay but not pedophile. The rest of the straight guy will not comment but upon reading the status update turn and tell the girl next to them, and say, see I told you so. What about the other 10s of millions? They are conversation between the commentators about how is that possible, organizing of gay pride parade with Justin, and not to forget the trolling of Jonas Sisters fan club.
Commenting has since then become a communication channel, some found friends from commenting on blogs, commenting on status message and even pictures or video. Good notification system play a big part in encouraging the continuity of the conversation. So after you left a comment on blog why not consider subscribing to the comment?
